Michelle’s Guide to Puglia, Italy

As a major shoe enthusiast, it’s probably no surprise that one of my favorite places in Italy is in the heel of the boot.

Puglia is a fascinating melting pot of cultures and a crash course in Ancient Civilization to boot (no pun intended). Its mix of cultures is visually striking, with ancient Greek, Roman, Baroque, Byzantine and Moorish architecture all in one place and surrounded by the Ionian and Adriatic seas.

I take my vacations very seriously: check your iPhones at the airport gate! The only exception I make is for Instagramming. (My handle is @millybymichelle…)

On a typical vacation day, I would throw on my MILLY Cabana swimsuit and head for a swim or a sail with my family. Lunch is long and leisurely when in Italy, and of course, always made from the most delicious local ingredients. My favorite meal was grilled local fish caught straight from the Adriatic sea, with fresh vegetables.

Next comes naptime! Siesta is a tradition that is alive and well in Puglia: the villages completely shut down from 2:30pm until 5pm. We loved to explore new villages in the late afternoon and begin the process of deciding which restaurant to dine in – such a hard choice! Piazzas come alive at nighttime no matter where you are in Italy: the lighting and the music seem to have an effect on everyone!
